Description :
  • Inspects, diagnoses, maintains, and repairs wastewater treatment plant electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems, equipment, and fixtures by performing a variety of skilled electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic repair work.
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains wastewater treatment plants and equipment including electric motors, engines, gas and electric powered pumps, drive units, emergency systems, power generation systems, pressure and flow regulators, and other treatment plan fixtures and appliances; checks proper equipment operation; notifies supervisors of alarms and equipment failure; requisitions materials and supplies needed; writes work orders for needed repairs.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and services equipment according to an established schedule and inspects facilities and equipment to determine the need for major maintenance or repair.
  • Checks and adds oil to pumps and engines, grease bearings and perform other related preventive maintenance work on equipment.
  • Disassembles equipment and replaces bearings and packing; removes and replaces hoses on gasoline engines; replaces air and oil filters; replaces or repairs valves.
  • Repairs, overhauls, or replaces malfunctioning, damaged or worn parts, materials, and equipment.
  • Uses test equipment and services, adjusts, and tunes a variety of equipment.
  • Performs journey-level electrical work including the test, location, and repair of electrical systems; installs plant-related conduits, wires, relays, pull boxes, switchboards, and switches required in making additions, extensions, or alterations in electrical systems.
  • Maintains and repairs specialized wastewater equipment such as flow recorders and other chemical feeding equipment.
  • Performs corrective maintenance on wastewater facilities and equipment, including disassembly, rebuild, cleaning, and overhaul/replacement of valves, filters, pipe fittings, pumps, and other assorted equipment.
  • Performs fabrication, welding, masonry, carpentry, and plumbing duties.
  • Performs maintenance and alterations on City buildings and facilities, including administrative offices, wastewater treatment plants, and pumping stations.
  • Confers with operations staff to determine equipment problems; suggests methods of minimizing such problems in an operational setting.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of vehicles, hand and power tools, and equipment.
  • Performs safety and service inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment; steam cleans, washes, and fuels equipment; assists in lubrication and maintenance of equipment.
  • Reads and interprets maps, blueprints, sketches, and diagrams in the performance of the work.
  • Performs general maintenance activities, including building forms, laying and finishing cement, and cleaning of treatment facilities.
  • Performs a variety of ground maintenance activities, including mowing, edging, and trimming landscape areas as scheduled, weed abatement, and painting facilities when needed.
  • Makes minor adjustments on service equipment; maintains tools and equipment in working order.
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
  • Reviews and controls quality of work of staff and consultants.
  • May train employees in work methods, use of tools and equipment, and relevant safety precautions.
  • Responds to complaints and answers questions from public or escalates to supervisor, as necessary.
  • Responds to maintenance and repair emergency situations as required.
  • Maintains computerized records and logs of daily activities; prepares reports as necessary.
  • Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements :
  • Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
  • Wastewater Maintenance Technician I/II: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by additional electrical or mechanical specialized technical training.
  • Wastewater Maintenance Technician I: One (1) year of experience involving skilled mechanical or electrical maintenance on major equipment and systems.
  • Wastewater Maintenance Technician II: In addition to the above, two (2) years of experience equivalent to Wastewater Maintenance Technician I at the City of Tulare.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
  • Wastewater Maintenance Technician I/II:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California's driver's license.
  • Wastewater Maintenance Technician I:
  • Within eighteen (18) months of the date of entry into the position, must obtain a Grade I Mechanical Technologist Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association.
  • Wastewater Maintenance Technician II:
  • Possession of a Grade II Mechanical Technologist Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association.
